Drive The Snot Out of Your Porsche
Dear GGR Members,
This year has all been about big milestone anniversaries. The Board is preparing for our big 65th Anniversary party at the Hiller Aviation Museum this Saturday. This is a pretty big venue, but it still sold-out so quickly. We need to remember for our 70th, we need to rent out an even bigger place, like Levi’s Stadium or something!
Speaking of 70, Porsche AG and PCA just announced the PCA70 911 Club Coupe, which has received a lot of media buzz lately. Based on the 911 Carrera T and offered with a manual 6-speed gearbox only, it is as pure as a modern 911 gets. Then they add on all these amazing custom features and details that makes this a truly unique car. Only 70 will be made and if you want one, you enter the raffle drawing. I immediately went online and entered the raffle myself.
But then two inevitable thoughts enter my head - price and use. First let's talk about price, this version will sell for about $185k. That’s quite a bit of money, but I also just realized a base 911 Carrera now starts at $132k (gosh I feel old…); add a few options and it’ll get up to $150k pretty easily. So with that context, the price of a PCA70 911 Club Coupe is not so bad, one can argue quite a bit of value for money.
The second thought involves use. If I were one of the 70 lucky PCA members that gets to purchase a PCA70 911 Club Coupe, how would I use it? This car is conceived as a super limited release car, so that in itself makes it precious. Weekend drives when the weather is perfect? Cars and Coffee events once a month? Enter it into Concours competition? Leave it in the garage with a cover on it? These would all be typical use cases for such a car. But for myself, I think I would have to practice what I’ve been preaching for all these decades - drive the snot out of it! Yes I think I would track this car regularly and give the Time Trial 3 class even more competition. If the paint gets chipped or scratched, a body shop is there to repair it. I would just bring it to the body shop and say, “please match the Sholar Blue paint, not the solid paint from the PCA60 911 Club Coupe, but the metallic formulation for the PCA70…”
Sincerely,
Howard Yao
