President’s Blog: GGR on Two Wheels

Dear GGR Members,

I’m going to talk about two things this month, one is new and one is old. First the new:

On Saturday April 4th, we had our inaugural bicycle ride. The event was added to our calendar and Instagram account, but I honestly had no idea how many people would show up. As I stood there, more and more people would show up until we had about 25 riders! We went out in two groups and each did about 18 to 20 miles, down Canada Road to Woodside. Sounds like the event may have some legs to make it a monthly ride from spring to fall. A great time was had by all and we got in shape doing it.

Now onto the old. Andrew Forrest is a GGR Past-President, Track Director, and overall great guy. He now spends much of his time and money being an active Club Racer in his Spec Boxster. Andrew and I hang out once in a while, usually over lunch. A couple weeks ago, he texted, saying we should schedule a time for lunch and that he had something for me. He didn’t say and I didn’t ask what it was, I kinda liked the mystery of it all. So last week, we had another great lunch and afterwards we walked to his car so he could give me what he brought for me. Check out the photo below:

I was totally blown away by this. Folks, this was my Autocross trophy for the 2005 Season! The BP represented our old car classification system where the first letter was the type of car and the second letter was the level of modification done to the car. So BP was a very popular class back in the day, it was a 914 with a bunch of suspension modifications. Old timers would remember “Kermit” my Ravenna Green 914.

I must have missed the Awards Ceremony back in 2005, so Andrew took all the unclaimed trophies and stored them at his house. He recently came across it and presented it to me, 21 years later! This little story just shows the quality of character of GGR members like Andrew and the long term friendships that are formed within our Club.

Looking forward to seeing you at an upcoming event!

Sincerely,

Howard Yao
